Amy Winehouse Collaborator Talks Unreleased Songs, Demos

Songwriter Stefan Skarbek first met Amy Winehouse when she was 14; a few years later they co-wrote "October Song," "Do Me Good" and "Amy, Amy, Amy." Skarbek, who has also worked with Estelle, K.T. Tunstall and others, estimates he wrote a total of 25 songs with Winehouse, including five completed demos he has at home, and says they remained friends until her death on July 23rd. When Rolling Stone spoke to him, though, he was just as interested in talking about the maternal, caring Jewish grandma-type who would make him chicken soup when he was sick as he was about her musical contributions.

Were you involved in the new music she was working on?

We were sort of going over some old songs that we’ve got – she had a little setup at home and we were just sort of writing over Skype. As a friend, I was just having a laugh with her more than anything. She had a home setup – we had about 10 songs, five of them are sort of completed.

So were the five completed songs older material you were revisiting?

Yeah, they were old songs we had, old chord progressions, stuff that has sort of lingered about that we were just fiddling with.

When were those five demos done?

The last one we did was probably two, three years ago.

What direction were the songs you did two years ago going stylistically?

I felt like she wanted to go back to this fun thing we were doing. We did songs like "Monkey Boy," which were just fun tongue-in-cheek songs. My biggest thing with her was she’d come to the studio in London and she’d always come in with some crazy story, boyfriend troubles or things like that. And I’d say something like, "Amy, Amy, Amy," and then we’d do a song called "Amy, Amy, Amy." We’d go to the zoo and then come back and write a song about monkeys. That was the extent of how it went, then I went one way, she went hers. She disappeared for a while, then came back with Back to Black.

Did you speak regularly or reconnect at some point?

She called me up when she came to L.A. to do a show at the Roxy. I hadn’t spoken to her for quite a while and then we hung out, spent a few days at Chateau Marmont. After that we were close again. She definitely went off on her journey and was exposed to a lot of fame and celebrity, and then I think the people who hung about previously became more important, the people who liked her for who she was and not because she was famous. And she was also quite into being famous, so the poor girl, there was a lot of conflict going on.

Why do you think she was conflicted?

Because she was inherently nurturing, she was a Jewish grandma. Last time I saw her she made me chicken soup 'cause I had a little cold. She probably hadn’t slept for four days and she was still making me soup and singing me songs and all that. Naturally, she was a caring, mothering person. And then her persona became an out-of-control rock star, but really she just wanted to hug and be hugged and be loved. She had a lot of that going on and she was surrounded by some pretty dodgy people at times and a lot of using people. And I think that it became hard. I think she started to ignore her maternal instinct and at times her caring side and she became her own caricature. She wanted to have a family, she wanted to be a mom, all those things.

When was the last time you actually saw her?

The last time I saw her was at her birthday party about six months ago.

And when was the last time you talked to her?

I spoke to her two days before she died.

What was your reaction when you heard about her passing?

Shocked and sad.

When you wrote together how many songs did you write and were you in a room together?

We were in a room. Over the course of two years we probably did maybe six months of writing and we probably did about 25 songs. So we did a lot, and it was more like developing stuff. We didn’t really know what we were doing – we’d have these visions and we’d listen to lots of records and have fun. I was just listening to this song the other day that is really sad called "Ambulance Man." Grandma got ill and she sang about the ambulance taking her nan away. A lot of it was just all sketches of things. And we ended up with lots of songs they did record.

Who owns the demos you have now?

Universal.

Have you been in contact with them about the songs?

I haven’t because I think my publishers will probably do something, but I know it’s still sensitive. [But] I’m sure one of the Universal people will contact us, or my publisher will contact them and release the demos. But the first thing I did when I found out she died, I listened to one of our songs called "October Song," which was just really said. It’s about her pet bird, Ava, who died. It was just really sad because you could replace all the lyrics with Amy and it was just such a testament to her, she lived that song.

How long ago was she sent to you for the writing?

Man, this is like 2001. I probably first met her when she was 14 and then we were working over the course of a few years.

What made her so special?

Anyone saying to her, "You’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that," she’d run a mile. She was compelled by the feeling and music, she never cared about any business. When we were initially doing things the record company would turn up and she’d sort of disappear into another room and play on the trumpet. I think that’s what was so amazing and charming about her – she knew she was the shit and she didn’t need to prove it to anyone. That became part of her magnetism and part of her appeal. When she wrote music, the best way I can describe her is she was like an owl and a porcelain doll, she was so wise, but then so young and innocent. She had the wisdom you get with an old person and then that kind of naiveté and innocence you get with a young child. I knew she was incredible – we didn’t even write lyrics, just messed around on a piano for five minutes and then she’d go in a room, come up with genius lyrics and amazing melodies. She opened the gateway to so many other artists and in my view, she changed the whole paradigm of music. I think she made it possible for Adele, for the other artists that have come through to exist and put some truth and honesty back in music again.

What happened to all the other songs you were working on?

I reached out to Matt Rowe, who I was working with and it was on his computer. He’ll probably dredge up some stuff and see if there’s anything just for nostalgia, I listen to stuff just for nostalgia at this point, these hilarious little outtakes and stuff. I’m not sure where all the other songs are. I know I’ve got a handful and there’s more that Matt has got on his computer. Once it’s not on the album you sort of forget about it. I wasn’t aware that suddenly there might be an interest in what there was.

What do you want people to know about her?

I loved her, she was someone that was ahead of her time. She had this incredible nurturing other side to her that no one has ever focused on. She was generous, she was just a good person and I think she would’ve made an amazing mother. If she hadn’t been so consumed in things she might’ve come out the other end and been a role model for lots and lots of people. That’s the thing I know her best for. Musically maybe some of the songs I’ve got will end up being released. Maybe not, I don’t know. But my biggest take on her is deep down she was a good person and she loved people. That’s something I don’t think anybody ever focused in on with her. The U.K. press is terrible for creating train wrecks, they love doing that. And it was always disappointing me to see those kind of things. Even the worst journalist in the world that says horrible things about her she wouldn’t hold anything against them. She’d make them chicken soup.

Andreas Kisser agradece ajuda do Torture Squad

Saxon: ‘Call to Arms’ será lançado no Brasil

Call To Arms representa a culminação desse período e o retorno há 20 anos antes disso. Eu amo as músicas.

A versão nacional será lançada no formato duplo incluindo como bônus o CD Live At Donington 1980.

Top 10 Rush Albums

Rush bassist Geddy Lee turns 58 today (July 29), and we’re celebrating by taking a look at some of the band’s best work. With 18 albums under their belt so far, which ones are “best” is a fiercely debated topic among fans of the Canadian trio. We’d like to add our voices to the discussion, and share our list of The Top Ten Rush Albums:

10 - ‘Snakes And Arrows’
2007

This slot was a point of contention among the UCR staff, when considering the last three full Rush studio albums released to date. The initial impact of ‘Vapor Trails’ suffered due to sound quality issues, but if you put ‘Test For Echo’ and ‘Snakes And Arrows’ up against each other, it’s a dead heat. In the end, the emotion surrounding Rush’s continued output of new music with ‘Snakes’ wins out. The initial single ‘Far Cry’ confidently validated that without a doubt, Rush had returned, offering a very immediate reminder of how vital their music remains in the present.

9 - ‘Roll The Bones’
1991

Rush’s first album of the ’90s found the band sending the keyboards further back in the mix as Alex Lifeson’s guitar regained its deserved prominence. The title track injected a spoken word rap, somewhat controversially, into the otherwise familiar realm of what had previously been expected from a Rush album. After shifting stylistic phases throughout the ’80s, ‘Roll The Bones’ firmly planted the Canadian veterans back on solid ground for an album that was generally well received by the Rush fanbase.

8 - ‘Permanent Waves’
1980

With ‘Permanent Waves,’ the band began to drift away from their harder-edged sound, slipping into a more radio friendly frame of songwriting. ‘The Spirit of Radio’ seemingly is a celebratory pat on the back for the entertainment medium of the same name. As drummer Neil Peart explains, that feeling exists at the core of the song, but it also laments the formulaic and soulless programming methods that were starting to rob radio of the once-great spontaneity enjoyed by listeners.

7 - ‘Signals’
1982

How do you follow up the most successful album of your career? If you’re Rush, seeking to match or surpass the success of 1981′s ‘Moving Pictures,’ you dig in and put out an album that’s more musically focused, with shorter songs (alas, they couldn’t all be ’2112′ length epics, apparently), while continuing to experiment with the evolving keyboard-heavy sound that the band embraced during the ’80s. One of the album’s best known tracks, ‘Subdivisions,’ began as a song that Neil Peart first jammed with members of the road crew during the ‘Moving Pictures’ tour before bringing in the rest of the band.

6 - ‘A Farewell To Kings’
1977

The fifth Rush album ushered in a couple of firsts: ‘Closer To The Heart’ was the first Rush song co-written with a non-band member, and it also gave the band their first hit in the U.K. As a perennial fan favorite, it’s been present in nearly every tour setlist, with only a few exceptions. ‘Closer’ was omitted beginning with the band’s 2002 tour, a move that caused great consternation amongst Rush fans. It turns out, the band just needed a break from ‘Closer To The Heart’ after playing it consecutively for so many years. It finally has seen regular action again as part of the current ‘Time Machine’ tour.

5 - ‘Hemispheres’
1978

Continuing the story that began at the conclusion of ‘A Farewell To Kings,’ Rush devoted the entire A-side of ‘Hemispheres’ to the second part of ‘Cygnus X-1.’ ‘Book I’ at the tail end of ‘Kings’ laid out the initial part of the story in 10 minutes. For ‘Book II’ on ‘Hemispheres,’ Rush would spend an additional 18 minutes fleshing out their mystical storyline. The epic dual suite probably isn’t the best starting point for anyone trying to introduce a friend to the top Rush albums. But if you want to show off a bit of the band’s musical chops, ‘The Trees’ makes for a nice and relatively quick (especially for the time period) excerpt.

4 - ‘Rush’
1974

Listening to Geddy Lee’s yowling vocals on tracks like ‘Finding My Way,’ (a point of contention with anti-Rush fans who find Lee’s early vocals to be harsh on the ears), from Rush’s 1974 debut is a “far cry” (intentional pun) from the overly polished sound that they’ve developed in more than 40 years as a band. For both their studio albums and live shows in the early years, less was often more, and the sound of ‘Rush’ closely reflects the band’s live sound from the era. Plus, one only needs to hear a few seconds of the seven minute-long ‘Working Man’ to know that Rush were heading towards bigger places.

3 - ‘Fly By Night’
1975

The second Rush album brought the studio debut of Neil Peart as the band’s new drummer and principal lyricist. Peart’s addition was a game-changing move, giving Rush a clear direction with a rhythmic pilot who was more than ready for the challenges that lay ahead. As older musical aficionados will recall, the chimes at the end of ‘By-Tor And The Snow Dog’ were pressed into the runout groove of the first album side. For older turntables, this meant that the chimes would keep playing until the stylus was lifted.

2 - ’2112′
1976

One of the highlights of the ‘Test For Echo’ tour was the full airing of the titular ’2112′ suite from Rush’s fourth album. Often mistakenly identified as a concept album because of the seven-part title track, ’2112′ was born out of the commercial failure of the band’s previous album, 1975′s ‘Caress of Steel,’ and delivered Rush their first gold record. The famous ‘Starman’ character also makes his first appearance on the back cover of ’2112.’

1 - ‘Moving Pictures’
1981

‘Moving Pictures’ is obviously one of Rush’s top albums, and that’s at least partially due to undeniable ‘Tom Sawyer.’ The classic anthem is certainly one of the great album opening tracks of all time, and the sonic punch its opening inflicts still sounds just as impressive as the first time that we heard it. Geddy Lee delivers one of his most famous lead vocals and the signature lyrical opening has us scratching our head, wondering how we left it off of our list of best opening lyrics earlier this summer. Unlike some ho-hum full album performances by other artists, the chance to see ‘Moving Pictures’ complete on the ‘Time Machine’ tour was a rare moment worth every concert dollar. But if you know Rush, you’ll know that you always get your money’s worth.

CHICKENFOOT: New Single Available For Streaming

"Bigfoot", the new single from CHICKENFOOT — the supergroup featuring guitar hero Joe Satriani, drummer Chad Smith, former VAN HALEN bassist Michael Anthony and frontman Sammy Hagar — can be streamed using the SoundCloud player below. The track will be released via iTunes tomorrow (Monday, August 1).

CHICKENFOOT will release its sophomore album, "Chickenfoot III", on September 26 via earMUSIC/Edel and from eOne Music in North America in a special 3D designed package.

Produced by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, METALLICA), "Chickenfoot III" and is described by Hagar as "the best record I've ever made." He tells RollingStone.com, "It's a lot more musical than the last record – the hooks and the songs are better. Satriani adds, "We created a record that was deeper and better than the first one . . . it makes a musician very happy when they can see that they are involved with something that's very moving forward and life-changing."

"Chickenfoot III" track listing:

01. Last Temptation
02. Alright, Alright
03. Different Devil
04. Up Next
05. Lighten Up
06. Come Closer
07. Three and a Half Letters
08. Bigfoot
09. Dubai Blues
10. Something Going Wrong

Regarding why the chemistry between the CHICKENFOOT bandmembers works so well, Hagar said in a recent interview, "Chemistry is the most magic thing you can have in a band. You can have four of the greatest musicians in the world, and if they don't have chemistry, the music ain't gonna be great. And you've seen it in a lot of other bands out there, in supergroups that have tried to be together over the years. It doesn't always work. CHICKENFOOT works. I don't know why. I think we're all grown up. Nobody cares, no one needs the money, no one's trying to get famous, we're not looking for fame and fortune. We just wanna play the kind of music that we love and we grew up on and continue that type of music and most people aren't doing that."

Smith will have two new records out within a month of each other, since the new RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS album, "I'm With You", arrives on August 30. Smith will not tour with CHICKENFOOT this time due to his commitments with his main band.

"That's the biggest disappointment about the whole thing," Hagar tells RollingStone.com, adding the band has auditioned several drummers and have an audition with Kenny Aronoff (JOHN MELLENCAMP, JOHN FOGERTY, SMASHING PUMPKINS). "He's going to spend a couple days with this and were just going to jam and if he fits. It's got to be the chemistry. Kenny can play that's for sure and we all like him. He's kind of like Chad — he's kind of crazy and he hits so fucking hard that he beats his drum set to the ground that after every show he needs a new drum set."

Lemmy: "Muito boa pergunta. Bem, (profunda respiração) 'Snakebite love'/ 'Bad Woman'/ 'Devils'/ 'March or Die'/ 'Make my day'/ 'In the Black'/ 'One more fucking time' e muitas e muitas outras!! A alma dessas músicas simplesmente some ao vivo, é estranho!"

RAMONES, PLASMATICS, DEAD BOYS, ANWL, SEX PISTOLS???? - Obrigado pelo seu tempo.

Lemmy: "Eu não sei na verdade, temos tocado Country, Punk, TED NUGENT, THIN LIZZY, VELVET UNDERGROUND, TAMMY WYNETTE, PLASMATICS, GIRLSCHOOL, YARDBIRDS, ZZ TOP, METALLICA, TWISTED SISTER, QUEEN, CHUCK BERRY.

Lemmy: "Antigamente - LITTLE RICHARD, CHUCK BERRY, JERRY LEE LEWIS, FATS DOMINO, BUDDY HOLLY, EDDIE COCHRAN nos BEATLES, STONES, YARDBIRDS, HENDRIX, THE MOVE, JIMMY REED, THE COASTERS, JAMES BROWN.

Lemmy: "'Hair of the Dog' (Outra daqueles que te deixaram desse jeito!)

Lemmy: "Isso muda – no momento é 'Going to Brazil'"

Sortudo, eh?"

Nem me faça começar!"

Lemmy: "Batata frita, Feijão-de-Lima, Bife Frito, Galinha Frita! Whisky Jack Daniel’s e Coca-Cola, Vinho Mateus Rose".
